Sql Server Compact 3.5 Sp1

I (and a few others in the office as I have found out) am having an odd issue. I am a network engineer, as well as an admin on all desktops/laptops in our organization. I am also set up as a local admin on my machine. Normally I can install and uninstall programs as I see fit or am required to do so. We were trying to test software deployment with Config Man, which required me to uninstall SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1 in order to test the software deploying to a clean machine (neither SQL or the software itself installed on the machine). At that time, I was able to uninstall it.

Attempted to install the in-house created software, and it failed out. Went back to the developer and let him know this, then re-installed SQL. Ran his app again, and it installed fine.

When it came time to test the clean install again, this is when my machine decided to no longer remove SQL. It will act like it is removing the program, but then when the Add/Remove program window refreshes, SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1 is still there.

I have tried to use 3rd party uninstallers (Ccleaner), and it will remove it from the list-leading you to believe it was uninstalled. If you close and re-open it however, SQL is still there.

I have also tried running theough the command-line (msiexec /uninstall ) and it also fails. The message that I was getting had something to do with a network error, but the file is locally copied onto the machine, eliminating the need to be connected to a network of any kind correct? Ok, well I fixed it myself. After every day's headache, the next one would bring a fresh idea.

After countless searches across several forums (and just Googling), I found a site that just talks about the Windows Installer cleanup utility , specifically dealing with corrupted MSIs. The 'patch package could not be opened' is one of the other messages I had seen, but thought it was unrelated. Lo and behold, what I did was re-register the MSI (msiexec /regserver) in CMD prompt, and then was able to uninstall the SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1 English. Don't know how it got corrupted, but I can now install and uninstall again. Ok, just tried to uninstall/repair it again. Even tried using another 3rd party application (Revo Uninstaller).

Was able to get the network-related error to pop up again. The File downloaded from Microsoft's website that I tried using is SSCERuntime-ENU-x86.msi. When I just tried to do even a repair, I was met with the error message 'Error 1316.A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file C:1b3a71b.msi.' That file is located in C:WindowsInstaller. Attempts to repair from there yield the following: 'Internal Error 2356. Attempts to remove from there yield the following: 'Error 1706.No Valid source could be found for product Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1 English. The Windows Installer cannot continue.'

The event viewer just posts those same messages under Application, and nothing in the System. Ok, well I fixed it myself.

Due to changes in SQL Server Compact SP1 and additional 64-bit version support, centrally installed and mixed mode environments of 32-bit version of SQL Server Compact 3.5 and 64-bit version of SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1 can create what appear to be intermittent problems. To minimize the potential for conflicts, and to enable platform neutral deployment of managed client applications, centrally installing the 64-bit version of SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1 using the Windows Installer (MSI) file also requires installing the 32-bit version of SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1 MSI file.
