Made the trip out after work last night to catch the band, at an intimate 1000-seat outdoor venue tucked into a hill in Hollywood near the Bowl (Johnson commented favorably on the venue at least once if not twice). Matt also said he was dealing with a sort of chest infection, but that the show had to go on. They opened with 'GlobalEyes' from NakedSelf, which surprised me. Was also great to hear a rearranged 'Flesh & Bone' brought to life with his cracking current touring band. It struck me how topical some of Matt's lyrics still are, such as in songs like 'The Beat(en) Generation'.

Masterlist Syntax Notes: Only the basics of the most commonly-used parts of the syntax are covered here. See the BOSS Masterlist Syntax.html documentation file in data/boss-common/ on the BOSS code repository for full details. Then later we did the dirty edit series & then came the Alainfinkielkrautrock blog we then invited some other friends to join, it’s basically a family thing. Your name is often mentioned and combined with your famous edits, like the contemporary classic “Beggin’” by Frankie Valli, but you are a great remixer too.

There were other tracks that I didn't need to ever hear live, such as 'Beyond Love' (never loved that one). The group's energy also seemed to flag during the middle of the show a bit on the Dusk numbers, surprisingly (or maybe Matt was trying to save his voice as they have yet another LA show tonight @ the Palladium). Was glad to see 'I Saw The Light' and the Hanky Panky record represented by that one, and Matt's comical, chatty solo delivery of 'True Happiness This Way Lies' during the encore was most amusing. If I was being greedy, I'd have liked to have heard more from the NakedSelf LP, actually (represented last night by 'GlobalEyes' & 'SoulCatcher')-would have loved to have heard how 'VoidyNumbness' or 'ShrunkenMan' sounded with this band, or even a later-period stray track like 'Darkness Falls'. Still, the career-spanning setlist was most impressive, as was the show overall. Very glad I came out for this.Set list is generally the same as what the band seems to be playing at every stop. I've just completed a collation of all of The The's non-album tracks onto a series of discs, and in the process of doing so discovered a surprising number of 'ringers' that made things more complicated.

So for fellow The The obsessives, here's a round-up of oddities to look out for:Uncertain Smile (single version) - the 'original 7' version' on 45RPM is not the original 7' version, it's (as the fine print reveals) an extended edit from the original 12' version. There's also a US promo 12' with shorter edits of both the 7' and 12' versions.Perfect (single version) - the 'original 7' version' on 45RPM is also not the original 7' version, though this time there's nothing in the liner notes to indicate this. It runs approximately the same time, but has an extended intro (closer to that on the 12') and fades a lot sooner. The Nature of Virtue (Version 2) - the b-side of the 'Perfect' 12' has been reissued several times. For some reason, when it was reissued on the 'The The vs.

The World' (a.k.a. 'Armageddon Days Are Here Again') 10' in 1988, they lopped off the last minute, fading it early rather than coming to a natural end. The completely different version from the 7' has never been reissued, as far as I know.

(When the track appeared on the 'Slow Train to Dawn' 12', it was the complete version.)Sweet Bird of Truth (single edit) - as with the above singles, the edit on 45RPM is not the original 7' edit. The single was actually originally released only on 12' and CD, but was rereleased after 'Slow Train to Dawn' the following year, where it got a 7' version running 3.38 (never released on CD, as far as I can tell).Sweet Bird of Truth (12' remix) - The long version on the original 12' and CD runs 8.20, and is present and correct on the second disc of 45RPM. But the original CD release of Infected, which includes the three 12' versions from the album as bonus tracks, edits out completely the long 'found sound' intro of about 45 seconds (which is longer here than it is on the album version), beginning instead with Johnson's unaccompanied spoken word bit.Heartland (single edit) - Same story as 'Sweet Bird of Truth': the 45RPM edit was a new creation for that compilation. Original 7' version runs 4.11.Infected (DJ edit) - Most of the original 7' singles carry the 4.47 album version, but some have a 3.54 'DJ Edit' that's shorter and edits out one contentious line of lyrics. These limited 7's had the same sleeve and catalogue number as the regular issues, but were differentiated by a sticker on the front (though not on my copy!) and different run time and side notations (i.e. TRUTH 3A DJ) on the labels.Slow Train to Dawn (single edit) - Runs 3.58. Nothing unusual or ambiguous about this, but it's never appeared on CD as far as I know.Slow Train to Dawn (12' Version) - Similar story to 'Sweet Bird of Truth' above: the CD of Infected carries a truncated version, but in this case the only difference is that it's faded about 15 seconds early, so it's basically inexplicable! The Violence of Truth (single version) - When it appeared on the b-side of 'Gravitate to Me', it was credited as 'Taken from the LP Mind Bomb', but the single version has a different intro.

There's no crossfade with the end of 'Good Morning Beautiful', and the spoken word piece that kicks it off is missing.Armageddon Days Are Here (Again) (single version) - Same as many of the above: the 45RPM version is a new creation. Original 7' version runs 4.25.Giant (DJ Food Version) - This was released under the name The The for the 2014 RSD 12', and had previously been released on DJ Food's 2011 album The Search Engine (as the 12' credits indeed claim). But the single version runs about a minute longer than the album version.

I'm representing all the singles, so in a few instances (e.g. I am on The The's email dist list, and they announced they had found some Gunsluts CDs in the corner of the warehouse. I got one, along with the Cineola Trilogy.)Dang! This is a great song, and kind of different than what they've/he's done otherwise, so I'm kinda mad (again) that there is all this material that remains unreleased that we can't enjoy. Before I die:a) I'd like to see humans land on Marsb) smoking made illegal (at least in California)c) fighting outlawed in hockeyd) all the unreleased The The material.
