Amazing popular band during the new wave/post-punk days in my country, there was really no new wave night without songs of the first five, six albums. After their big hits, more meant for the big masses ('Don't You Forget about me', anyone?) they really disappeared - more or less - from the radar. In a way strange how that band was being seen as a kind of traitors, going for the big money. Many early fans didn't even play their first albums anymore, despite the fact three or four of them were really arty and innovative, and sometimes even great. I was always wondering how fast they changed from audience.Well, a long story to say I am really looking forward to this box and am praying they will be mastered at a great sonical way! Click to expand.Sounds like hyperbole to me.I do love New Gold Dream though, I think that's a fantastic album. I can't believe it's the same band that did those awful crass commercial songs like Alive and Kicking. It was pretty clear at the time that they chose the U2 route of big songs for the US market as they had seen what U2 were doing. I don't blame them that much as they had been very artistic and almost anti-commercial before that, so fair enough if they wanted some money.I have a tape that I recorded of the radio of a gig they did for Radio 1 in about 1980.

It was the transition period between that guitar driven new wave sound of the first album and the electronic sound to come. Really great gig.'

Great cultural impact' suggests they were the leaders of the UK electronic scene but I think it's fair to say they were just one of many bands like that, and actually there were bands more important. Very excited about this. I was never more than a passing fan back when they were big, have a few of their albums on cassette (yes, you read that correctly), but they have grown on me have had them on my list to pick up for a bunch of years now. This kind of package is exactly what I'm looking for.I'm hoping sometime in the not too distant future they'll take the same approach with the later albums. For fans of the band, how would you rate the 'Themes' project and the Silver Box?

Would it be worth searching out those releases separate from the remaster project? Because of what they became after 1985, their innovative and influential early work is usually downplayed. If they had quit after Sparkle In The Rain, they would have been considered 'legendary' by the current hipster community for sure (that would be hyperbole too, but hey, it's the way these things work.)so yeah, I would never consider going to a regular SM gig, but since I love their early work and this 5x5 tour will visit around these parts (Amsterdam is just some 30 minutes away), I'll be there for sure! For me 'Once Upon The Time' wins a nomination in the 'most disappointing albums by a band you used to love' category. 'Street Fighting Years' was better but way too long and the production was terrible (sorry Mr Trevor Horn) and I hated the last section of the album with Mandela Day/Belfast Child/Biko.It took them two decades to produce a decent album again (05/05/05).I saw them live three times: NGD tour (absolutely fantastic - I would rank it in the top 5 of all live shows I have ever attended), SFY tour (everything was over the top in an almost parodic way) and Real Life tour (really sad - the audience was probably one tenth of what they could have had 5 years before).
